When to Start Potty Training

Wondering when to start potty training? Or when your child may be ready for potty training? There’s actually a “magic” age! Most experts say that the best age to start potty training is 22 months. However, besides this “magic number” there are many other things you should consider before you start potty training. To help you decide if your toddler is ready to start potty training, let’s review some of these important factors!

What are some signs of potty training readiness?

  • Your toddler can stay dry for a two-hour stretch and occasionally wakes up dry.
  • He can pull his or her pants down, or understand simple undressing.
  • Your child has regular, predictable bowel movements.
  • He or she gives you a sign that they are peeing or pooping–either by certain facial expressions or using a simple word.
  • They understand simple directions.
  • Your toddler can sit still for 2-5 minutes at a time.
  • She understands bathroom lingo, such as “pee” or “poop.”
  • He shows interest in learning and is curious about your bathroom habits.

What are some signs that your toddler is NOT ready to start potty training?

  • She does not understand simply words such as “pee” or “poop.”
  • He does not care if he pees or poops in his diaper, or if it drips down his leg.
  • Your toddler does not understand the concept of the potty, flushing, or anything related to going to the bathroom.
  • Your child shows no interest in how their mommy or daddy uses the bathroom.
  • Your toddler cannot pull his or her own pants or underwear down without help.

So there you have it! As you can see, there are many factors involved—not just your toddler’s age! To start potty training, the best thing to do is buy a toddler potty, take off his or her diapers, and see what happens. Based on their reaction and behaviors, you will know right away if your child is ready or not!

And if you are having trouble potty training, like I did, I highly recommend the Start Potty Training Program, where you can train your child in just a few days. I potty trained my toddler in just three days using this program. I followed the step-by-step guide, and was given all the answers to my questions that came with potty training including: what to do during outings, travel or at nighttime; how to handle my daughter’s fear of the potty; and how to handle my toddler’s stubbornness. For months, I tried potty training on my own because I knew she was ready! And, once I found and started the Start Potty program, she was literally potty trained over one weekend!

So, if you are having trouble, I highly recommend the program. You can get it  pastedGraphic.png. Do not let the potentially cheesy video turn you away—it is truly worth a watch (for you and your child!).
